MELANIE | THIS IS ME

Melanie was not alone when she told me that as she gets older she feels that she is “often invisible to society”, and that “society generally promotes beauty over brains for women.” But now, she tells me, “I’ve never felt more comfortable and at ease with who I am. I’m trying to teach my girls that looks are not as important as other qualities, I want them to have inner strength.”

But, like many, coming to this realisation was not overnight. “Yes, I’ve struggled, I think every woman is made to feel like they aren’t good enough generally speaking.”

Melanie is a survivor of domestic violence and has spent the last seven years rebuilding her life. Like many she has juggled being a mother, working full time and supporting her mother as she fights cancer. She tells me that triumphing through this adversity has made her stronger than ever.

When asked if Melanie thought she, herself was beautiful she told me, “I think I’m beautiful when I surprise my children with something that makes them happy, when I help them with their struggles, and when I help my mum with her struggles.”

Melanie described herself as a little quirky to me, and said she admired the off-beat beauty that Frida Kahlo had. Wanting something different, and creative to express her personality, and inspired by the artwork of Bjork and Lana Del Ray, we created a unique experience for Melanie.

And her words of advice to those that might be struggling with not seeing their own beauty?

“The things that make you different are what makes you beautiful.”

Melanie, you are truly an inspiration in embracing your uniqueness and passion. YOU have inspired me to push harder and further and expand my business. I am so honoured to have met you!
